Reflexes: Impact on Learning and Development

Reflexes serve as a basic blueprint for the development of later skills, such as speech, drawing, reading, writing, play, and creativity. During normal child development, reflexes emerge to perform specific functions and then fade (disappear or integrate). If a reflex persists, the child's body is constantly forced to "fine-tune" all systems and expend additional energy. The more such reflexes persist, the more energy the child's body expends to coordinate all systems and control them. Fully-extinguished reflexes impact academic performance and learning ability in school. In this workshop, we will learn how to test reflexes and perform special exercises to help reflexes fade. When children develop a solid foundation such as maturing reflexes, sensory integration, and eye motility, they will excel in academic skills. These are the basic building blocks of development, whether you know them or not. If we don't help children develop these skills, they may continue to struggle in school instead of thriving!
